Biography
Prof. Yang received his B.S. and M.S. from the Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), one of the major universities in China, and Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University, USA, all in meteorology. Before joining SYSUas a Distinguished Professor in 2013, he was a scientist at the NOAA Climate Prediction Center. He was with the Atmospheric and Environmental Research, Inc. and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center prior to his career at NOAA. He also served as a co-Chief Editor for SCI journal “Advances in Atmospheric Sciencesâ€, President of the Chinese-American Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, and Vice President of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology in USA. Prof. Yang has published about 160 papers, with nearly 7000 citations, in the areas of monsoons, ocean-atmosphere-land coupled system, global and regional climate change, and climate variability and predictability. He was one of the Most Cited Chinese Scholars in 2014 and 2015 (statistics by the Elsevier), and is currently a principal scientist of the China Key Scientific Research Plan project.Prof. Yang holds the following positions atthe SYSU:Member of the Academic Committee and Member of the Academic Degree Evaluation and Conferment Committee of the University, and Associated Dean of the School of Atmospheric Sciences. He is a State Specially Recruited Expert of China, and serves as the Vice Chair of the Subtropical Meteorology Committee of the Chinese Meteorology Society, Associate Editor of “Journal of Climateâ€, and Editor of “Journal of Meteorological Researchâ€.
